The pastor of Grace Pentecostal Church in East Bremerton, Washington, Danny Allen, has decided to do something to get kids back on track and away from gangs. He started a new program, a Saturday School for boys which he calls "Project Prevention."
"The program is designed to address spiritual and educational needs for boys," said Pastor Allen. "We find that boys of that age (young teens) are not really prepared for the rite of passage into manhood. Often, gangs prey on them and recruit them," he said. The Saturday school sessions are designed to be an addition to regular school. And although the special school includes prayer and study of the Bible, it also includes man-to-boy discussions of what the youngsters want to do with their lives.
The youngsters also receive instruction on proper hygiene, have their teeth checked by a local dentist, are tutored in basic math skills and have their vocabularies broadened. "We want to prepare the boys for a lifestyle that's positive and productive," said the pastor. He added that the program is open to any youngster, whether he's in trouble or not. The program is a nine-month course. Each youngster is also matched with an adult of like interests. There are field trips to prisons, retirement homes, museums, amusement parks and other parks. "There is no charge for the program, but donations are requested. More African Bibles are needed, as are uniforms for the kids," said Pastor Allen.
